Experiment 14

Last illustration of the year. Experiment 14 started like all my experiments (a doodle), but I liked where it was going, so I decided to boost it to about 7000×4200 pixels and work on it as much as I wanted, to finish it.

Experiment14: Deconstruction

The process has been incredibly smooth, which helped in delivering this semi-abstract composition, one aspect I recently thought I’d like to develop.
Sometimes I feel that excessively realistic and figurative representation of subjects become a constraint for the mood I intend to express. I’m glad I managed to stay away from these virtual “chains” of my mind.

In a way Experiment 14 is the culmination of all the previous experiments. If you notice, since Experiment 1 I’ve been trying to fade the figure into a background, playing with solidity and perception, real and unreal.
I consider this piece a little step ahead in my search for personal expression.
I’ll keep working this way as much as circumstances allow me to.

PS: I even made a new signature, something that doesn’t look as nasty as my actual handwriting. :D

Experiments 09 and 10

I talked about my series of Experiments before, right? In short, they are just that: experiments. Things I do in 2 or 3 hours, to try something new.
Sometimes they are entirely improvised, other times I start with an idea.

Last year I made one I didn’t like entirely, but I’ll post it anyway. It has a concept-art feel to it, which is quite ok, but overall I hate how rushed it looks.
On the other hand, that’s the point of these “experiments”: to try new approaches and methods.

Experiment 09

Experiment 10 (done a few weeks ago) is a combination of abstract and figurative elements.

Experiment 10

It’s entirely done in Painter, to simulate oils a bit. I wish it was made with real oils.
Maybe one day.
Anyway I enjoyed working on this one. Forcing myself to very few elements is a good way to practice color and composition. I also admit I like abstract painting more and more. This experiment perhaps opened a new direction for me, something to explore in the future.
We’ll see.
